The Cop Jobs Are on the Rise
Tuesday, January 10th, 2012Availability of criminal justice careers is expected to increase in the next decade. Why? Without an abundance of criminals, no additional jobs would be needed. However, crime rates in America climb as the economy declines. People get desperate in desperate times. We might have learned lessons from “Les Miserable’s,” but apparently we have not. Where is the dignity of incarcerating individuals because they could not earn a living, were struggling with mind-altering substances in order to cope, and did not have the resources they needed to make better choices?
Thomas Moore’s “Utopia” says it all, “For if you suffer your people to be ill-educated, and their manners to be corrupted from their infancy, and then punish them for those crimes to which their first education disposed them, what else is to be concluded from this, but that you first make thieves and then punish them. ” We don’t have a prison system, we have a prison industry. Many laws were written to create criminals that would populate and fund the industry. Certainly, some people need to be locked up, but how many of our country’s inmates are simply people who hit on hard times?
